AI statement

How Textile Opportunity Space 13 (TOS13) uses artificial intelligence, and how we work with the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689).

On this website

  • No AI system talks to you or makes decisions about you on this site. There is no chatbot, and nothing you send through the join form is scored or sorted by AI: the TOS13 team reads every response.
  • Parts of this site's text and code were drafted with AI tools. The TOS13 team reviewed everything before it was published and is responsible for it.

In the fieldlab

Developing and testing AI is part of the fieldlab's research:

  • Elevate develops AI-supported assessment of used garments from photos, to route each garment to repair, reuse, resale, upcycling or recycling.
  • Encode develops an orchestration platform that matches questions from textile companies to the knowledge and capacity of other organisations in the sector.

How we apply the AI Act

  • Risk. These systems assess textiles and match organisations; they do not assess or make decisions about people. In our assessment they fall outside the AI Act's prohibited practices and high-risk categories. We review that assessment as the systems develop, and before any of them is used outside the fieldlab.
  • Research. Most of this work is research and development, which the AI Act largely exempts until a system is placed on the market or put into service. We follow the Act's principles of transparency and human oversight from the start.
  • Human oversight. For now, a person checks every AI output in the fieldlab and makes the final decision. If that changes as the systems mature, we will reassess them under the AI Act and update this statement.
  • Transparency. When a system built in the fieldlab interacts with people or generates content, we say so.
  • Data. Training data, such as the garment image dataset, is collected for its purpose with the consent of the partners involved, and personal data is kept out of it.
  • AI literacy. Partners who build or use AI systems in the fieldlab get guidance on what those systems can and cannot do.
